Rep. Howard McKeon (R-CA) has introduced bill H.R. 147 in the
U.S. House of Representatives that would repeal the Government Pension Offset
(GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) of the Social Security Act. If
repealed this would allow CSRS retirees to collect their full social security
entitlement as well as their full CSRS annuity. A short e-mail, note or phone
call to your respective congressional representatives asking them to support
this bill might aid in its passage.
Local #121 recently received this response from Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) to
just such an e-mail:
Thank you for
contacting me to express your support for H.R. 147, the "Social Security
Fairness Act of 2005." I am a strong supporter and co-sponsor of this
legislation. As you know, the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP)
effectively reduces an individual's own Social Security benefit if the
individual becomes eligible for a federal, state or local government
pension after 1985. H.R. 147 would amend Title II of the Social Security
Act to eliminate provisions that reduce primary insurance amounts for
individuals receiving pensions from non-covered employment.
In the prior session
of Congress, I fought hard to bring the "Social Security Fairness Act"
to the House floor for a vote. In conjunction with 192 other House
Members, I signed a discharge petition that would force House leadership
to consider the legislation. Unfortunately, our petition came up short
of the 218 signatories necessary to move the bill.
